Nancy is the eldest of six siblings. The passion for music that her father had as well as the music he played in the family room were an enormous influence on Nancy as a young girl. At just 4 year old, she realized she'd be a singing star. The talent she developed was cultivated through her participation in the church choir. She won a TV-talent show when she 15 and began being a regular on the tv series Skyline Melodies while still in high school. In the nightclubs she started performing at the age of fifteen. Nancy was a high school graduate aged 17 and enrolled in Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a entire year. After that, she left to pursue a job as a professional musician. She recorded her first record with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. The group performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made while she was in the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she make the move in New York so as to increase her chances of success. In 1959, Nancy moved in The Big Town. She was hired to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club in The Bronx and there was a place where Adderley's agent had come across her. His agent signed her with Capitol in the year 1960. The year she made her debut was the same year. Guess who? Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums within two years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B to jazz and torch song. Nancy Wilson's 1962 collaboration together with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top of the charts, and the year 1963 saw her scoring her first hit Tell Me the Truth. The song led to a performance at the New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America the following year and she became a star.
