Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
The jazz musician Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe Ohio to iron-worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as a domestic servant. Nancy was the first out of six kids. The passion for music that her father had and the records he played at home were a huge influence on Nancy at the age of a girl. In her early years she was already able to establish the impression of her identity and what she hoped to accomplish. Church choirs was instrumental in developing the talent. At the age of 15 when she was 15, she got a spot on an audition on television and started appearing regularly in the Skyline Melodies Tv Show while at the time she was still in high school. At the same age, she began to work in nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she finished high school. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - now Central State University - for one semester, Nancy left to be a professional performer. The first album she recorded was in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956 with whom she toured from 1956 to 1958. Nancy started recording with Dot Records in 1956, while with the group. Cannonball Adderley urged her to travel to New York in order to increase her fame. She went to The Big Town, New York in the year 1959. Within a short time she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company saw her singing and instantly signed her. Agent Adderley signed her to Capitol in 1960. She made her debut that year. Guess who I saw today? Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. At first, she focused on blues and rhythm under the influence of Adderley, she shifted away from R&B as she embraced music from jazz and torch. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped bring her to the forefront and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was recorded in 1963. Her first job was at the New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's top club.
