Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson, an ironworker from Chillicothe on 20 February 1937. The mother of her child, Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy was the oldest of six kids. The father of Nancy was a musician and would play records at home. This was a major influence on her as a child. When she was just four an age, she knew she'd be a singing star. The talent she developed was cultivated due to her participation in the church choir. When she was 15, she won the talent show on T.V. and was able to regularly appear on the Skyline Melodies Tv Show while being in High School. It was at that time that she began to work in nightclubs at the at the same time. Nancy at the age of 17, graduated from high-school and matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to pursue a career as a musician. The first album she recorded was in 1956 by Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The band toured with her from 1956-1958. Nancy released her debut recording through Dot Records during the time she spent with this group. Cannonball addederley suggested she move into New York for her career, and in 1959 she made the move to The Big Town. Adderley's Agent heard her at The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she signed. Within a month after arriving to New York, she was in the city. His agent signed her with Capitol in the year 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess Who Saw Today. The records she released were also successful. Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B to jazz and torch song. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley joined forces in 1962 and helped push her up in the chart. In 1963, she scored her biggest hit by releasing Tell Me the Truth. This performance brought her to the stage at the New York Coconut Grove in 1963, America's most popular nightclub.
